π’ DAY 1 β Sembalun Village β Plawangan Sembalun Crater Rim
The Savanna Ascent
Your adventure begins in the cool morning air of Sembalun Village (1,156m), a picturesque settlement nestled in a vast volcanic valley surrounded by rolling green hills. After a light breakfast and briefing, you'll set foot on the trail β the first hours winding through iconic savanna grasslands with panoramic views of Mount Rinjani's majestic peak dominating the horizon.
The terrain begins gently, allowing you to warm up as you pass through Pos 1 and Pos 2, where you might spot wild cows grazing and the occasional long-tailed monkey. After Pos 3 (Pada Balong), the real climb begins β a steady, challenging ascent through increasingly sparse vegetation as you approach the treeline.
By late afternoon, you'll reach Plawangan Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639m) β your campsite for the night. As the sun sets behind Mount Agung in Bali, watch the sky explode in brilliant orange, pink, and purple over Segara Anak Lake far below, with the smouldering cone of Gunung Barujari rising from the crater. This is one of the most spectacular sunset views in Indonesia.

π΄ DAY 2 β Summit Attack (3,726m) β Segara Anak Lake
The Summit & The Sacred Lake
This is the day you came for. The alarm goes off at 1:30 AM under a canopy of stars so bright you'll swear you can reach out and touch the Milky Way. After hot coffee and a light snack, you'll strap on your headlamp and begin the legendary summit push β a steep, relentless climb over volcanic scree and gravel in the dark.
The route to the summit is a true mental and physical test: two steps up, one step sliding back on the loose volcanic sand. But as the first light of dawn breaks behind you, painting the sky in hues of gold, amber, and purple, every step becomes worth it. You'll reach the true summit at 3,726 meters just as the sun crests the horizon β a breathtaking 360Β° panorama stretching from Bali's Mount Agung in the west to the Sumbawa Islands in the east, with the Gili Islands floating like emeralds in the sea below.
After summit celebrations and photos, you'll descend back to camp for a well-earned breakfast. Then, a dramatic descent into the crater itself β arriving at Segara Anak Lake (2,008m) by midday. Spend the afternoon soaking in natural hot springs rich in minerals that soothe every aching muscle, exploring mystical caves, or simply sitting by the lake's edge watching Gunung Barujari puff smoke in the distance. Camp tonight is right by the water.

π΅ DAY 3 β Segara Anak Lake β Senaru Village (Exit)
The Rainforest Descent
Wake up to mist rising gently from the crater lake β a serene, almost spiritual scene. After a relaxed breakfast and farewell photos, you'll begin the final leg of your journey: the iconic descent through Senaru's tropical rainforest.
Unlike the dry savanna of Sembalun, the Senaru route is lush, green, and alive with the sounds of nature. You'll trek through dense primary rainforest that forms part of the Mount Rinjani National Park, home to black ebony leaf monkeys, rare birds like the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, and towering trees draped in moss and epiphytes.
The trail climbs briefly out of the crater rim at Plawangan Senaru (2,641m) before beginning the long descent. You'll pass through Cemara Lima and numerous rest posts (Pos 1, Pos 2, Pos 3 Senaru), each offering different perspectives of the jungle. The air gets warmer and more humid as you lose altitude, and the vegetation transforms dramatically β from alpine scrub to moss forest to dense tropical rainforest.
By mid-afternoon, you'll emerge at Senaru Village (601m) β tired, triumphant, and forever changed. The famous Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls are nearby if you still have energy. A cold drink, a final group photo, and your transfer back to civilization awaits.
